Conductivity or thermal response testing allows the measurement, in situ, of the average thermal properties of the ground environment exchange. This type of testing is mainly used when setting up closed loop vertical geothermal exchangers. The thermal properties of the exchange environment essential to a quality geothermal design, are thermal conductivity, diffusivity and temperature of the exchange environment.
A thermal conductivity test requires a complete geothermal well set up. This geothermal control well can, once the conductivity test completed, be linked to the rest of the geothermal heat exchanger of the project. The equipment used for performing the conductivity test is then hooked up to this geothermal well for an average duration of seventy-two hours. The precision of the readings taken during the whole testing process being of commanding importance, Géo-Énergie inc. proceeds on a regular basis, to the calibration of all measuring instruments equipping the test unit. This is particularly the case when testing duration is under forty eight hours.

This testing provides the basis for certification that the formula used to fill the drilling's annular space respects the thermal conductivity required as per the specifications. A sample of 500ml representative of the formula used on the work site is sufficient for the testing.
